No Proof

Hey, remember that time, we must have been about thirteen
We went down to the beach and watched the waves roll in?
Don’t remember what we talked about,  don’t remember who we were
We wrote our names in the sand

Now we got no proof
No kind of evidence
Water took away everything that was there
We got no proof
No kind of evidence
It’ll always be our word against theirs

The town where we lived was a fine little town
With people to see and places to know
And sometimes now and I’m so far away
I wake up and I wonder where’d that little town go?

We got no proof
No kind of evidence
Every trace of it vanished in the air
We got no proof
No kind of evidence
It’ll always be my word against theirs

Grandpa said that when the train came through
Everybody’d stop what they were doing just to watch it go by
And that engineer never even slowed down
He just laid that whistle out in a long thin whine

And they got no proof
No kind of evidence
Just a rumor of a train and a bucket of dust
They got no proof
No kind of evidence
But I got this old railroad spike all covered up in rust

Even you, yesterday, I knew it was you
   and not somebody else
You just walked right by me like you didn’t even know me
Made me feel like a ghost of  myself

But you got no proof
No kind of evidence
You got no reason to say my name
You got no proof
No kind of evidence
It’ll always be your word against mine
