He Was Looking For You

He was looking for you
He didn’t say why
I didn’t ask
He had that look in his eye
Said he had a dream and thought it might come true
He was looking for you

No sleep in days
(He told me that)
He wasn’t wearing a coat
He wasn’t wearing a hat
I guess he knew you once and the fondness grew
He was looking for you

He showed me some pictures
Of people I didn’t know
His hands were shaking
His voice got low
He offered me money, he offered me other things too
He was looking for you

He had a scar on his cheek
From when he was a kid
Tattoos on his wrists
He tried to keep hid
One of an anvil and one of a kangaroo
He was looking for you

I gave up farming
It just don’t pay
I gave up whiskey
Or it just went away
Everything I quit just quits me too
He was looking for you

He said he liked the painting
That was hanging on my wall
Said it reminded him of something
He didn’t quite recall
I didn’t tell him but I think he knew
It was a picture of you

Now the rain’s coming on
The light’s getting dim
That was years ago
I still think about him
Sometimes I think about you too
He was looking for you
